According to him, available data indicates that the country achieved the longest period of macroeconomic stability in recent economic history.

Currently, the national foreign reserves stand at $4.5 billion, whilst inflation has also been reduced to single digit.

The government has also implemented the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) pay policy, which has increased the take home pay of most government sector workers.

South Africa’s lack of employment has now become a crisis that is over two decades old, said economist Mike Schussler as he presented the trade union UASA’s 2012 South African Employment Report (SAER).

According to PoliticsWeb, Schussler said that the problem is that the cost of producing goods and services in South Africa has risen too quickly. Unskilled wage rates have rocketed, while management and specialised skills are often underpaid.

“These factors, more than anything else, explain why people cannot find work as the price of certain labour has become unaffordable. South Africa’s unskilled earn too much in both relative and in absolute terms,” Schussler said, adding that in the 2nd quarter of 2011, less people were employed in manufacturing in South Africa than any time since 1972.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) is to partner the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) to actualise the mandate of the fund and boost the nation’s economy.

The President of the society, Mr Mustafa Shehu, made the statement in Abuja on Friday when the Executive Secretary of the PTDF, Mr Muttaqha Darma, paid him a courtesy visit.

Shehu said that the synergy would help to improve the capacity of NSE members in the oil and gas sector.

He stressed the need for engineers to build the relevant capacity so as to be in a position to drive the oil and gas sector if the country was to realise the purpose of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Content Development Act 2010.

The Act provides an elaborate framework for the utilisation of Nigerian goods and services in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.

The NSE boss said that the society had set up an Engineering Practice and Resource Centre (EPRC) as the training arm of the society to identify the industry’s specific needs and provide the requite training to meet such needs.

“One of the sectors where the resource centre is interested in is the oil and gas sector where many engineers are employed and the sector has a great capacity to absorb graduate engineers being rolled out from universities. “

The PTDF boss told the NSE team that the fund was a special purpose fund, established by the Federal Government to intervene in developing appropriate manpower to man the oil and gas industry in Nigeria.
